Kick-starting the year with a significant business award,  Australian transport provider HDrive has confirmed the purchase order of two ‘Taurus’ hydrogen fuel cell trucks – powered by Ballard – to leading freight operator TOLL Transport for the Australian market.

The 70-ton heavy-duty Taurus truck was developed by Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer Wisdom, and the hydrogen-powered vehicle is equipped with a 110kW engine based on Ballard fuel cell technology, while its stack adopts Ballard's FCgen®-LCS M series with a power density of 4.0kW/L.

The zero-emission truck is an inter-city freight carrier and provincial long-distance transportation solution, deriving power from the Ballard fuel cell which delivers up to 400kW of power. The truck has a maximum range of 1,000km and a 70-ton payload.

“The Taurus prime mover is a cutting-edge solution that embodies our commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. Market adoption of the Taurus highlights the growing recognition of hydrogen fuel cell technology as a viable and essential component of the global transition to clean energy. As more organisations embrace these solutions, the positive impact on our environment will continue to grow.”

A subsidiary of clean energy company, Pure Hydrogen, HDrive will deliver the prime movers to TOLL for operational deployment in Victoria by the close of 2025. The order demonstrates the growth in demand for hydrogen fuel cell-powered heavy-duty mobility solutions on a global level, with the Taurus already proving successful across Australia with Barwon Water and PepsiCo – who have been trialling the vehicle for commercial operations.

The Taurus is the first Vehicle Type Approved (VTA) hydrogen fuel cell prime mover in Australia, having passed Australian Design Rule standards after extensive testing and consultation with domestic regulators. The Taurus' payload of gross 70 tonnes represents the largest clean energy truck available for Australian roads, and offers a road-ready solution to the broader goals of transport and logistics companies in reaching carbon reduction targets in line with Australian legislation.
