Energy security and hydrogen backup power: Strengthening resilience at the Munich Security Conference

GeoPura deploys zero-emission HPU-M™ mobile hydrogen power unit to support Munich Security Conference

GeoPura_Munich

At this year’s Munich Security Conference, energy security formed a central theme. World leaders gathered to address defence, economic risk and global stability. Every discussion, live broadcast and secure meeting depended on uninterrupted electricity.

In partnership with Siemens Energy, GeoPuradeployed a green hydrogen-fuelledHydrogen Power Unit at the Rosewood Munich inSalvatorplatz. The HPU-M™ connected directly to the hotel’s distribution board and stood ready to provide instant backup powerin the event ofa grid outage. The system safeguarded conference suites, ballrooms and critical infrastructure, including live broadcast and streaming operations, while producing zero carbon emissions and zero harmful air pollutants.

Energy security, backuppowerand grid resilience have become defining priorities for governments and infrastructure operators. Geopolitical instability, extremeweatherand volatile oil and gas markets continue to expose weaknesses in traditional energy systems.Organisationsnow require reliable, low carbon alternatives to diesel generators and imported fossil fuels.

This deploymentdemonstratedhow hydrogen power strengthens energy security and operational resilience without compromising sustainability.

Recent global events have underlined how vulnerable energy systems can be. Extreme weather increasingly disrupts electricity networks, causing outages that affect airports, hospitalsand transport hubs. The recent outage at Heathrow Airport disrupted thousands of passengers and showed how quickly power failure can escalate intowideroperational and economic impact.

Geopolitical instability adds further pressure. Conflicts affecting gas pipelines, oil producingregionsand shipping routes directly influence global supply and pricing. Wars and political tensions create fluctuating oil and gas prices, placing governments and businesses at risk of sudden cost increases and supply constraints.

In this context, energy independence is no longer optional. Organisationsmust reduce exposure to imported fossil fuels, protect critical infrastructure fromdisruptionand ensure continuity of operations during periods of grid stress.

The role of hydrogen in energy security

Hydrogen plays a distinctive role in building resilient energy systems. It enables operators to store excess renewable electricity generated from wind, solar and other low carbon sources. Through electrolysis, surplus electricity produces hydrogen, which can later be converted back into power when demand rises or grid supply falls. This process transforms intermittent renewable generation into dependable, dispatchable electricity.

Unlike battery only systems, hydrogen storage can provide sustained power over longer durations. Batteries respond instantly and manage short term peaks. Hydrogen fuel cells extend that capability, delivering longer running backup without the emissions associated with diesel generators.

Hydrogen can also be produced domestically and stored onsite, strengthening energy independence. It can be transported to remote or temporary locations and scaled to meet the needs of essential infrastructure. In urban environments, hydrogen fuel cells operate without producing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides or particulate matter at point of use, aligning resilience with air quality and climate objectives.

How GeoPura HPUs™ work

GeoPura’s HPUs™ combine hydrogen fuel cells with integrated battery storage. The battery provides immediate response and supports peak loads, ensuring no interruption if grid supply fails. The fuel cell then generates continuous electricity by converting hydrogen into power, producing only water as a by product.

This hybrid design enables seamless transition during outages and sustained operation for extended periods, self charging the battery. HPUs™ can operate as standby backup generators, off grid power systems or supplementary power sources during high demand. Onsite hydrogen storage and refuelling capability remove reliance on diesel logistics and support longer term resilience.

The result is a flexible, scalable and zero emission alternative to conventional temporary generation.

Proven hydrogen backup power across critical infrastructure

GeoPura’s hydrogen fuel cell generators already support critical infrastructure across the UK. We have worked with National Grid during controlled shutdowns and substation maintenance activities, maintaining essential operations while replacing diesel backup with zero emission power.

We have also partnered with Uniper to reduce reliance on fossil fuel generation during outages and system upgrades. By deploying HPUs™, Uniper maintained business continuity while lowering emissions, demonstrating that clean technology can deliver reliability as well as sustainability.

In addition, GeoPura has delivered resilient power solutions to the Ministry of Defence, where secure and dependable electricity is mission critical.

Our collaboration with Siemens Energy extends beyond individual projects. Together, we are scaling hydrogen power solutions through engineering integration, manufacturing capability and global reach. By combining our hydrogen production, technology and deployment expertise with Siemens Energy’s manufacturing and energy infrastructure experience, we are accelerating the adoption of clean, resilient power across critical sectors.
