GeoPura delivered large-scale, zero-emission power at this year’s Boomtown, using green hydrogen to power HYDRO XL, the festival’s 20,000-capacity main stage.
GeoPura’s HPU2™ provided the reliable power needed throughout the build-up and live festival, supporting the sound, lighting and visual production behind performances from some of the weekend’s biggest acts.
From Skrillex and Four Tet to Floating Points, Groove Armada and DJ EZ, HYDRO XL hosted an incredible line-up across the weekend, complete with the huge sound, lighting and visual production that Boomtown is known for.
Boomtown significantly increased its use of hydrogen power this year. Following the success of the smaller HYDRO stage in 2025, the festival scaled up for 2026, using green hydrogen to power one of its main stages and putting cleaner power at the heart of the festival experience.
Boomtown used GeoPura’s HPU2 system, fuelled by green hydrogen, to replace traditional generators and provide the large-scale power HYDRO XL needed without producing CO₂, NOx or particulate matter at the point of use.
Renewable energy powers electrolysis to produce green hydrogen, which GeoPura stores as a fuel and transports to where customers need power. On site, the HPU2 uses Ballard hydrogen fuel cells to convert that hydrogen back into clean electricity, with water as the only by-product at the point of use.
Designed for large-scale power requirements, HPU2 units can work together to create multi-MW power systems capable of supporting major stages, site infrastructure and other high-demand applications.
GeoPura’s team was on site throughout the festival, delivering reliable, zero-emission power from the build-up through to the live performances and supporting the impressive sound, lighting and production needed to entertain the crowds.
Moving away from diesel delivers benefits beyond carbon reduction. Diesel generators produce nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, affecting the air breathed by festivalgoers, artists, crew and local communities, particularly when equipment operates close to stages, campsites, production teams and large crowds.
Hydrogen fuel cells eliminate CO₂, NOx and particulate matter at the point of use. At an event attracting tens of thousands of people, that means cleaner air around the stage while helping Boomtown reduce the climate impact of producing a major festival.
These benefits are increasingly important as the effects of a changing climate become more visible. Against the backdrop of another period of exceptionally hot and dry summer weather, reducing reliance on fossil fuels is an increasingly urgent challenge. Major events can take practical action now to cut emissions while continuing to deliver the power, reliability and entertainment audiences expect.
Boomtown joins a growing number of major events using GeoPura’s hydrogen power technology to reduce their reliance on diesel while maintaining the reliability and scale their operations demand.
GeoPura combines hydrogen production, storage and logistics with large-scale power generation, providing the technology, fuel and infrastructure customers need to move away from fossil-fuelled power.
