GeoPura to supply green hydrogen to major UK construction project

Renewable energy supplier GeoPura has been selected to provide the largest volume of green hydrogen ever contracted for a British construction project. The Lower Thames Crossing, led by National Highways, is an ambitious development that includes new roads and a tunnel beneath the River Thames. The project aims to reduce congestion and improve transport links between the ports of southeast England, the Midlands, and the North. 

GeoPura will provide 2,500 tons of green hydrogen as a fully managed service, replacing more than 12 million liters of diesel and saving an estimated 30,000 tons of CO₂ emissions during construction. The hydrogen will be supplied as a managed service, which includes the delivery, storage and distribution to equipment on site during the main construction phase of the project.

Six hydrogen generators, powered by Ballard fuel cells, are already at work on the project, charging batteries used in electric machinery on the existing construction site in Essex with zero emissions.  

This latest agreement adds to GeoPura's growing portofolio of projects that are producing green hydrogen at various locations across the UK - including its HyMarnham Power facility in Nottinghamshire, which is transforming a former coal power station into a clean energy hub.

Successful completion of the Lower Thames Crossing project will bring relief to traffic using the Dartford Crossing's bridge and two tunnels, which runs across the River Thames and is currently the only route under and over the river to the east of London.
