Île-De-France's hydrogen fleet deployment - powered by Ballard

Written by Thomas Davies | Feb. 3, 2026

Paris-based urban transport service provider Île-De-France Mobilités and transport operator RATP Dev have come together in the drive to decarbonize one of Europe's most extensive public transit networks - rolling out a 17-unit fuel cell bus fleet in France that is powered by Ballard.

The Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen-powered buses are now in daily service on Route 103 in the Val-de-Marne area of southwest Paris. The fleet is supported by an on-site hydrogen refueling station at the Créteil depot, which has capacity to produce up to one ton of hydrogen per day. The site is also able to deliver 300- and 700-bar that can support cars and heavy-duty trucks, as well as city transit buses.

This initiative forms part of a broader, multi-year strategy to transition the entire regional bus and coach fleet to zero-emission operation - a commitment that places Île-de-France Mobilités among the most ambitious metropolitan authorities advancing sustainable transit in Europe.

Serving nearly 4 million daily trips across more than 1,900 lines, Île‑de‑France Mobilités' regional decarbonization program is an ambitious one, with the transport authority stating its clear goal of establishing an entirely zero-emission bus and coach fleet by 2029 - including battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and bio-gas vehicles. The organization plans to introduce roughly 1,000 new clean buses per year as part of its strategy to hit fleet renewal goals.

The role of this initial fuel cell bus fleet is to gather operational experience and help shape future mixed zero‑emission fleet strategies ahead of the full 2029 transition. The zero-emission units are providing invaluable real-world data on hydrogen propulsion in everyday service across the Paris area. They will help Île-de-France Mobilités assess performance, operational costs, refueling logistics, and passenger experience, supporting future fleet decisions.

By blending hydrogen, battery, and biofuel solutions, Île-de-France Mobilités is strengthening resilience and energy independence while setting a precedent for other major European cities pursuing deep decarbonization of public mobility.
