Gillig, a leading U.S. manufacturer of transit buses, recently announced the expansion of its zero-emission vehicle line-up. In a collaboration with Ballard Power Systems and BAE Systems, Gillig will introduce a new hydrogen fuel cell powered bus, scheduled for production in 2026.
The new fuel cell bus will integrate a Ballard fuel cell engine, which delivers a range of more than 500km, enhanced engine recovery and fast refueling. Ballard's technology offers a durable, compact, and easy to integrate solution for vehicle OEMs - which already powers more than 1,700 buses globally.
Gillig’s hydrogen fuel cell bus, which is currently in development, will provide transit agencies with exceptional zero-emission operational range, rapid refueling, and reliable performance in diverse climates and terrains. As agencies evaluate their options for the future, this new offering broadens the horizon for those considering hydrogen as a decarbonized solution.
Joining Ballard’s market-leading bus business, which currently includes more than 15 bus manufacturers in North America, Europe and Asia, Gillig is the latest manufacturer to offer Ballard’s fuel cell engine, which, with more than 200m kilometers of operational service, is among the most mature fuel cells available.
