Californian public transit operator Montebello Bus Lines has started its transition to zero-emission transit services with the introduction of an initial three-unit fuel cell bus fleet that is powered by Ballard.
Montebello Bus Lines's (MBL) new fleet of New Flyer's Xcelsior CHARGE FC™ fuel cell bus integrates Ballard's FCmove®-HD+ module, delivering proven performance, durability, and reliability. The 100kW fuel cell engine's provides extended range of 300+ miles, and its compact, easy-to-integrate design presents an efficient solution for MBL's public transit operations.
The phased program is designed to lay the foundation for future expansion. With the ambition of transitioning its entire 66-bus fleet to zero-emission technologies, MBL plans to introduce future decarbonized buses as conventional vehicles are retired, while a planned permanent fueling infrastructure and facility modernization will support the transition toward the agency’s 2040 fleet goal.
This latest U.S. deployment supported by Ballard fuel cell technology brings the total number of hydrogen-powered buses in North America to 330. It adds to a growing track record of fuel cell buses in daily service, highlighting hydrogen's role in helping transit agencies meet their operational needs while tranitioning to zero-emission fleets.

As part of the rollout, MBL is preparing both temporary and permanent fueling stations and upgrading its maintenance facilities to support safe and efficient hydrogen operations.
MBL operates eight fixed-route lines, along with commuter and paratransit services, providing nearly 3 million rides annually across Montebello and 14 surrounding cities. The agency’s new hydrogen buses will operate across the entire network for full shifts without needing to stop to refuel - providing reliable, zero-emission transport for riders throughout the communities it serves.
