Extending a strong partnership in the deployment of zero-emission public transit, Ballard Power Systems has announced a purchase order to supply 200 fuel cell engines to New Flyer, a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. – a leader in electric mass mobility solutions in North America and Europe focused on bus and coach manufacturing.

Delivery of the 200 FCmove®-HD+ 100kW engines is planned for 2025 and will power New Flyer’s next-generation Xcelsior CHARGE FC™ hydrogen fuel cell buses for deployment across the U.S., including California, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, and New York.

This latest fuel cell order represents a total of approximately 20MW of power, and is the second purchase order under the partners’ long-term supply agreement (LTSA) announced in January 2024 – and double the first purchase order of 100 engines under this agreement.

"We are thrilled to strengthen our partnership with Ballard and bring cutting-edge zero-emission fuel cell buses to the market. As more transit operators transition to zero-emission fleets, they are increasingly adopting fuel cell technology to meet their goals. We are committed to supporting our customers through their journey to sustainability."

Enabling longer driving range, rapid refueling, uncompromised performance in a wide range of challenging climates and weather conditions, and high availability, the value proposition of hydrogen fuel cell buses is becoming increasingly clear and obvious to industry players looking to transition to decarbonized fleets - and growing market interest around the world reflects this shift in perception and business intent.

“We are very excited by the continued partnership with New Flyer and their growth in demand for fuel cell engines,” said David Mucciacciaro, Ballard’s Chief Commercial Officer. ”This order demonstrates New Flyer’s continued confidence in the performance of Ballard’s fuel cell engines and the growing market interest in the value proposition of hydrogen fuel cell buses, including long range, rapid refueling times, performance in all weather conditions, and high availability.”

The most recent order follows an initial agreement to supply a minimum of 100 units of  Ballard's FCmove®-HD+ fuel cell engine, which are primarily produced in Ballard’s Bend, Oregon facility with Buy America compliance.  New Flyer is currently executing phased deployment, with the Xcelsior CHARGE FC™ vehicles being introduced on public transit routes in states and provinces across the U.S. and Canada - including Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Manitoba.
